Who Is Alex Newhook?

Currently playing for the Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League (NHL), Alex Newhook is a Canadian professional ice hockey center. During the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, the Colorado Avalanche selected him 16th overall. He became the third player from Newfoundland and Labrador to win the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.

 

It was during the 2017-2018 season that Newhook began his professional career with the Victoria Grizzlies of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). With 66 points in 45 games and nine points in 12 postseason games, he finished second in team scoring.

As the league’s leading scorer with 102 points in 53 games, Newhook committed to joining Boston College for the 2018-2019 season. He was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche following that successful season. Newhook won the Vern Dye Memorial Award as the league’s most valuable player and the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s most valuable player.

 

In his freshman year at Boston College, Newhook scored 42 points in 34 games and earned honors such as the Tim Taylor Award, Hockey East Rookie of the Year, Hockey East Second Team All-Star, and All-Rookie Team.

As a sophomore, Newhook played for Team Canada in the 2021 World Juniors. After returning to Boston College, injuries and quarantine protocols limited his playing time.

 

As part of his entry-level contract with the Colorado Avalanche, Newhook concluded his collegiate career on March 31, 2021. The Colorado Eagles, the AHL affiliate of the Avalanche, were his first stop on his professional journey, where he scored five goals and nine points in eight games. On May 5, 2021, he was called up to the Avalanche taxi squad and made his NHL debut.

 

On June 27, 2023, Newhook was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for draft picks and Gianni Fairbrother.

As a member of Canada’s silver medal-winning team at the 2021 World Junior Championships, Newhook contributed three goals and six points.
