The Nation Building Force exists legally, since when it arrived in 1964, the Parliament enacted the Law for the establishment of JKT and that law gave legal force to the 1963 decision of the Council of Ministers to establish the Force. According to the Law, joining JKT was voluntary. In 1966, the law was amended to establish a procedure for joining JKT in accordance with the Law.

This procedure applied to young people who had completed their fourth year of high school and had graduated from universities, colleges of higher education, sixth forms, and other institutions where they had received training for a variety of professions, including teaching, medicine, nursing, and other fields.

Legal authority granted the JKT director the right to invite young people to join JKT. The first batch of 64 young scholars who participated in Operation Resolution joined JKT in July 1967.

The Nation Building Army did a fantastic job of instilling a sense of patriotism and nationalism in the young people who participated in the Army. Here, young people from all ideologies, races, tribes, and religions come together, live in close quarters, and train and work as brothers in the same family.

Today, August 25, 2022, the National Building Army (JKT) announced that all young people in Tanzania’s mainland and the Zanzibar Islands could volunteer to join the Army’s training program for 2022.

The Offices of the Heads of Regions and Districts where the Applicant is from coordinate the process for young people to apply and ultimately be selected to join the training, according to Brigadier General Hassan Mabena, Head of the JKT Administration Branch.

“For young people who completed form four and form six from the years 2019 to 2022, they must have a score of at least 32 and have a grade of first to fourth for young people in form six. History of JKT – TANZANIA

The Nation Building Army (JKT) was officially established on July 10, 1963. JKT training was temporarily halted by law on June 15, 1994. The government of the United Republic of Tanzania has brought JKT back into operation.

51 years ago, that is on July 10, 1963, the Nation Building Army was officially established following the implementation of the Resolution of the Council of Ministers. The session was held on April 19, 1963 under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief and President of Tanganyika, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

The idea of establishing JKT came from the recommendations of the General Meeting of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU Youth League), a meeting held in Tabora region in 1958 which was given by the Secretary General of the TANU Youth League at that time, Brother Julius Nyerere, who now it’s late.

The Act That Established JKT

According to the Law, joining JKT was voluntary. In 1966, the law was amended to establish a procedure for joining JKT in accordance with the Law.

This procedure concerned young people who have graduated from universities, colleges of higher education, sixth form and those who have completed the fourth form who have received training in colleges of various professions such as teaching, medicine, nursing and so on.

The director of JKT was legally empowered to call the young people to join JKT. In July 1967, the first group of 64 young scholars joined JKT in Operation Resolution.

In support of the Government’s decision regarding the establishment of the Nation Building Army, leaders and other scholars who graduated in the past decided to join the JKT training. For example, the former Second Vice President Mr. Rashid Kawawa, the former Minister of State in the Office of the First Vice President Mr. Aboud Jumbe, the former Speaker of Parliament Chief Adam Sapi Mkwawa along with some MPs and various Party and Government leaders joined the training of the Nation Building Force in January, 1968 and they did their training in the Ruvu camp located in the Coastal Region.

In order to establish better foundations and better leadership management, the Nation Building Force was a full force, so when it arrived in 1975, the JKT was merged with the Tanzanian People’s Defense Force and thus became a full part of JWTZ.

From that time JKT Officers and Soldiers became JWTZ soldiers and were recognized by JWTZ titles. Before that JKT had its titles that were different from JWTZ titles. The Nation Building Force continued its duties of training young volunteers in accordance with the law. However, two basic things were emphasized or added to JKT’s responsibilities, first JKT to be the production division of JWTZ responsible for providing the Army with its food, clothing and other needs. Second, JKT is the place to provide initial military training and that JWTZ will continue to recruit from JKT graduates.

In the mission to fulfill the first responsibility effectively in 1982 JKT Property Production Corporation (SUMA JKT) was created. The main goal was to have an effective tool to plan, manage, coordinate and implement the responsibilities of economic and wealth production in JKT, which the organization continues to do until now.

In terms of training for young people, for example, more than 305,625 young people have gone through JKT and been given military training and various life skills in various fields and fields. In the nineties, the provision of training for young people in JKT was affected. Access to services and requirements for training and the ability to run JKT camps in general became difficult.

The instability of the world economy, led to a sharp increase in the price of oil, the fall in the prices of crops that were produced here in Tanzania and the high cost of the war against the forces of Nduli Idi Amin of Uganda caused the economy of our country to shake. This situation greatly reduced the ability of the Government to fulfill its basic responsibilities in various sectors in the country.

Reinstatement of JKT Training According to the law

The restoration of JKT training in accordance with the law was one of the things that was given high priority in the fourth phase of the government of the United Republic of Tanzania under the Commander-in-Chief and President of the United Republic of Tanzania Mr. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.

The government of the fourth phase has brought back JKT training because of the good will to continue building patriotism for the youth of Tanzania. It will be remembered that due to the difficult economic situation the government could not afford to conduct JKT training in accordance. On June 15, 1994 JKT training was temporarily suspended by law.

The Nation Building Army has done a great and good job of building the spirit of nationalism and patriotism among the young people who went through the Army. This is a place where young people of all ideologies, all races, all tribes, all religions meet, live together and do training and work as brothers of the same family.

There is no youth training organization that has exceeded JKT in that work, perhaps even the behavior of many Tanzanians not to ask each other about their tribes is due to the presence of JKT. Young Tanzanian patriots who go through JKT always meet different young people from every corner of our country, that’s why they don’t even have time to ask each other’s tribes because they all see themselves as one.

In addition, the effects of the suspension of JKT training affected many and that is why the Government of the fourth phase has restored JKT training in accordance with the Law. Finally, on March 26, 2013, JKT training began, including fulfilling the government’s promise to revive the training in the Ruvu camp.

As was the case in 1964 when JKT started and in 1968 after the training in accordance with the Law was established, national leaders took the lead in participating in the training. The JKT training started and there were 22 members of parliament who participated and completed the leadership training. JKT Ruvu camp, nine MPs graduated including, Hon. Mendrad Lutengano Kigola (MB), Hon. David Ernest Silinde (MB), Hon. Easter Amos Bulaya (MB), Hon. Murtaza Mangungu (MB), Hon. Yusuph Haji Khamis (MB), Hon. Neema Mgaya Hamis (MB), Hon. Halima James Mdee (MB), Hon. Livingstone John Lusinde (MB) and Hon. Said Mohamed Mtanda (MB).

In addition, five Members of Parliament graduated from the Bulombora-Kigoma camp, which include Hon Sabreena Sungura (MB), Hon Seleman Said Jafo (MB), Hon Mariam Kasembe (MB), Hon Mariam Salum Msabaha (MB) and Hon Yahaya Kasim Issa (MB). Five Members of Parliament were in the JKT Mgambo-Tanga Camp, where the graduates include Hon Zitto Z. Kabwe (MB), Hon Raya Khamis (MB), Hon Dr. Anthony G. Mbassa, Hon Idd Azzan (MB) and Hon Abdallah Hajji Alli (MB). The Msange camp in Tabora region also had three MPs namely, Hon Meshack Mfukwa, Hon Rita Kabati and Hon Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba.

More About JKT

One of the issues given top priority in the fourth phase of the United Republic of Tanzanian government by Commander-in-Chief and President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, was the restoration of JKT training in accordance with the law. In an effort to continue fostering patriotism among Tanzania’s youth, the government of the fourth phase has brought back JKT training. It will be recalled that the government was unable to conduct JKT training in accordance with budget constraints. JKT training was temporarily halted by law on June 15, 1994.

No youth training organization has performed that work better than JKT; in fact, many Tanzanians’ refusal to inquire about one another’s tribes may be attributed to JKT. Young Tanzanian patriots who participate in JKT frequently interact with diverse young people from all over our nation, so they don’t even have time to inquire about one another’s tribes because they all view themselves as one.

The fourth phase, in which the government reinstated JKT training in accordance with the law due to the effects of the suspension of JKT training, also had a wide-ranging impact. After keeping its promise to restart training in the Ruvu camp, the government finally started JKT training on March 26, 2013.

National leaders took the lead in taking part in the training, as was the case in 1964 when JKT began and in 1968 after the training in accordance with the law was established. 22 members of parliament participated in and successfully completed the JKT training in leadership. For the two months of training, which they had requested themselves, the parliamentarians were dispersed among various camps in the hopes of fostering greater patriotism for their country.
