1. What is NSFAS?

NSFAS stands for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, which is a program run by the South African government that offers financial aid to undergraduate students to assist in covering the cost of their tertiary education after they graduate from high school. The Department of Higher Education and Training provides funding for it.

In 1999, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) took the place of the Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA).

NSFAS was managed and controlled by TEFSA, a non-profit, from its inception until 2000. In 1999, NSFAS, a statutory organization, replaced TEFSA. The system is supported by local and international donations and more than R30 billion in funding from the Department of Higher Education and Training (in 2018).

Bursaries pay for tuition, housing, food, and travel expenses for “full-time” students, but only tuition fees for “part-time” students.

As of November 20, 2019, 365,922 applications for financial assistance in 2020 have been submitted to NSFAS, 2019, an increase from 278,738 applications in 2018.

The government has committed roughly R80 billion to NSFAS over the next three years, according to Dr. Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.

Enter your username and password.
Click on the My personal details tab.
Enter your current cell phone number, email address, and other details for editing.

7. Which Candidates are eligible to apply for NSFAS?

Candidates Eligible To Apply For NSFAS 2023 or 2024

If you are a South African citizen planning to study in 2023 or are presently enrolled in a public university or TVET college and match the following conditions, you are eligible to apply for the NSFAS bursary using the online application form 2023.

The terms are as follows:

1. If you are a SASSA Grantee,

2. If your total annual household income is less than R350,000

3. A disabled individual with a combined family income of more than R600,000.

4. A student who starts university before 2018 and whose home income is less than R122,000 per year.

8. How can I get my OTP if I can’t remember or use the email or mobile number I used to register?

Go to www.nsfas.org.za, and click on myNSFAS account.
Enter your username and password.
Click on the My personal details tab.
Enter your current cell phone number and email address.
Click to update your details.
A Time Pin (OTP) will be sent to the new cell phone number and email address that you have provided. Enter the OTP and click submit.
Your details will immediately be updated.

9. What date will the application results be released?

All applicants will be informed of the results of their applications once NSFAS has confirmation from the institution that they have received an academic offer.

You will be informed of this before the beginning of the academic year via SMS, email, and your myNSFAS account.

10. What documentation may I provide with my application if I’m a parent or guardian and unemployed but not laid off?

An affidavit will be accepted; however, your employment status will be verified through government entities and 3rd party agencies.

11. What supporting documents must I submit with my application?

All applicants are required to submit:

Certified copy of your ID, not older than 3 months A signed and completed consent form.
If you are dependent on your parents/guardian/spouse, please provide: Certified ID copies of parent/s, guardian, spouse not older than 3 months Proof of income of parent, guardian or spouse (pay slip or appointment letter If you are self-sufficient (no parent/guardian support) please provide: Proof of income (pay slip or appointment letter).
If you have a disability, please provide: Completed and signed Annexure A (if your information is not pre-populated on the portal).
If you are an orphan, please provide: Completed and signed Declaration Form, Other documents required, if applicable: Retrenchment letter / UIF documentation; Death certificate/s; Divorce decree.

12. The closing date for 2023 applications?

Students may reapply after withdrawing their application, provided they do so before the deadline.

13. How long does it take NSFAS to confirm my information with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA)?

When you create a myNSFAS account, your ID number, name, and surname are immediately verified. We use verified information from DHA; if the information is inaccurate, you must contact DHA to have it corrected.

14. What if I already have a myNSFAS account but can’t remember the username, password, or cellphone number I used to sign up with? How do I reactivate my profile?

Follow the steps below to reset your myNSFAS login details:

STEP 1

Go to: www.nsfas.org.za
Click on ‘mynas’
then click on ‘forgot password

STEP 2

Type in your, ID number
choose what you require help with: password or username or both
then click on
‘submit’

STEP 3

Enter The username
link to change your password (the password will be sent via SMS and email)

STEP 4

Open the link and you’ll be redirected to the reset password page.

Reset your password by following the prompts on your screen

15. I have loaded my ID number, name, and surname, but I cannot continue with my application

The system validates all information as received from the Department of Home Affairs. Ensure that you type in your ID number, name/s, and surname exactly as they appear on your ID document or birth certificate.

16. Do my documents need to be certified?

No. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, NSFAS has removed the requirement for documents to be certified.
