The oldest bank in South Africa is FNB. It can be traced back to Grahamstown’s establishment of the Eastern Three Creeks Province Bank in 1838. The boom in the district’s wool exports at the time was funded by the bank.

Four branches of the bank existed in Grahamstown, Middelburg, Cradock, and Queenstown by 1874. The Oriental Bank Corporation acquired the bank in 1874 as a result of a recession (OBC).

The Oriental Bank Corporation, however, decided to leave South Africa due to financial issues it was having in India, and the Bank of Africa was established in 1879 to take over the OBC’s operations there.
