On October 1, 2022, the eagerly anticipated DStv Streama will be available for purchase in South Africa.

The official launch date was disclosed by MultiChoice South Africa CEO Nyiko Shiburi on Thursday at the business’ 2022 Media Showcase.

The DStv Streama is a compact streaming device that supports Dolby Atmos virtual surround sound and 4K video in HDR 10.

By plugging an Ethernet cable into the back of the Streama or by connecting wirelessly with the built-in Wi-Fi 5 receiver, users can connect the device to the Internet.

Similar to Xiaomi’s Mi TV Box or Mi TV Stick, rivals of MultiChoice, the Streama comes with a tiny remote control.

The remote has shortcut buttons for YouTube, Showmax, and Netflix. A microphone button is also present for voice input.

The operating system of the box is based on the open-source RDK platform, which is utilized by other well-known broadcasters such as Sky.

Its design is identical to that of the DStv streaming app, with minor improvements to the TV Guide.

Additionally, it offers third-party streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and YouTube Kids, which are also available on the Explora Ultra, as well as applications for MultiChoice’s Showmax and SuperSport streaming services.

Customers can add subscriptions to their accounts for some of the third-party services as well as sign up for DStv bundles directly through the set-top box.

August 2020 saw the launch of the DStv Streama, which is more than two years ago. At the time, MultiChoice said that the release date would be announced “in due course.

For a long period, it remained silent on any concrete launch plans, fueling rumors that the product had grown obsolete.

Shiburi informed MyBroadband in November 2021 that the worldwide chip scarcity contributed to the Streama’s delay since they had to reconsider the chipset to put in the device.

Recertifying was required as a result of the Streama’s upgrade from an Amlogic to a Realtek chip, an engineer who worked on the device told MyBroadband.

Shiburi also stated that the Streama was delayed to guarantee that it could compete with the greatest in the world from the start.

“This box needs to be extremely high-end,” Shiburi said.

However, during MultiChoice’s financial results presentation for the fiscal year 2021/2022, officials officially disclosed the box will launch by September 30, 2022.
