Nominees For 2022 AFRIMA awards: The official list of nominees for the 2022 edition was announced on Wednesday, September 14, by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Executive Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA). The AFRIMA jury chose 382 nominations across 39 categories from a total of 9,067 entries—the most entries the awards have ever received since they were founded—to represent all five regions of Africa as well as the diaspora. Recall that in July, the jury, which was made up of a 12-member panel of music experts and the AUC, held a 10-day adjudication to select the top entries from the competition to create the list. Importantly, nominations for this year’s awards were limited to submissions that were valid from August 20, 2021, to August 5, 2022. This year, the Western African region leads the regional nominations with 134 nominations, or 35% of the total; the Eastern African region comes in second with 69 nominations, or 18%; the Southern African region comes in third with 68 nominations, or 17.8%; Central Africa pulls its weight with 52 nominations, or 13.6 percent; and the Northern African region comes in fourth with 49 nominations. To highlight five African regions and the musical talents that represent those regions, the award show’s jury selected 382 nominations across 39 musical categories. Adam Tiran, a jury member from South Africa, expressed his confidence in the talent choices he and the other members had made this year. “After carefully going through all 9,076 submissions, we are confident in our choice this year. We are confident that this portrays the state of the African music market at the moment in an accurate and inclusive manner “Tiran said. “We have worked hard to make sure that AFRIMA’s nominations continue to be legitimate and authentic as always,” the statement reads. With a total of 134 nominations, West African nations took the lead. Eastern African nations came in second with 69 nominations for their artists. With 68 nominations, Southern African artists came in second, followed by Central African artists with 52 nominations, and Northern African artists with an entry total of 49 nominations. The non-African global region for this year’s award show received 10 nominations. According to Angela Martins, Head of Culture, African Union Commission on the Jury, the nominations span a number of categories: “The nominees list, which includes 10 regional award categories and 29 continental award categories, was made public on www.afrima.org. At the awards, the final “Legend Award” category will be revealed. Due to the high caliber of this year’s entries, we also reinstated the category for “Best Soundtrack in a Movie, Series, or Documentary.” Remember that we had to put it on hold last year because there weren’t enough high-caliber entries?, said Martins. Overall, we are extremely proud and confident in our work, and we will keep working harder to ensure that AFRIMA continues to be the standard of global recognition for African music in keeping with its vision. The 2019 All Africa Music Awards will take place over four days, from December 8 to December 11, 2022. The organization intends to reveal which nation will host the awards ceremony on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
